| Adare |
Adare or Ath Dara in Gaelic means - The Ford of the Oak Tree. The Adare pattern is distinguished by its Open Plain Diamonds crystal cut. Adare, in County Limerick, is a model village of quaint, thatch roofed cottages and gardens tumbing with flowers. Salmon and trout can be fished in the river Maigue. Overlooking that fertile river the Franciscan Friary founded by the Earl of Kildare in 1464 has long since fallen into graceful but preserved ruin.
The 13th century Trinitarian Abbey had the distinction of being the only place in Ireland for the redemption of Christian captives during the Third Crusade. The 14th century Augustiinan Abbey was possibly another of the Earl of Kildare's creations. These FitzGerald Earls of Kildare had their strongly fortified Desmond castle at Adare for almost 400 years until Cromwell had it dismantled in 1657. Later the estate was bought by Thady Quin, ancestor of the Earls of Dunraven who, in the 19th century, built the neo-Gothic Adare Manor - one of Ireland's stately homes more recently transformed into a luxury hotel and venue for the Irish Golf Open in 2007 and 2008. |
