John Rocha

The History of Waterford Crystal  |  How Waterford Crystal is Made  |  Caring for your Crystal

Born in Hong Kong to Chinese-Portuguese parents (1953), educated in London and based in Ireland, John Rocha is a versatile designer of womenswear, menswear, Waterford Crystal and interiors. Drawing from his Oriental-Irish background, his designs are based on simply cut lines that combine modern style with the artistry and skill of Waterford's craftspeople. He was named British Designer of the Year in 1994 and in 2002 was further awarded "Commander of the British Empire" (CBE) in The Queen's New Year's Honours list.

In 1997, in a first collaboration, The John Rocha at Waterford Crystal Collection was launched that now includes a wide range of tabletop crystal. The newly designed stemware is characterised by a contemporary shape, created by sculpting the weight out of the glass, and a modern approach to a classic cut. The result is a collection that is light and feminine in form and sensory to the touch.

John Rocha says: "With Waterford, you not only design with the purest crystal, you also work with light". The original designs of Geo and Signature continue to be highly appreciated throughout the world. In 2006, the striking "Black Cut" John Rocha collection was launched, signaling a return of opulence and elegance with its high gloss black surface. The launch of the "Voya" and "Lume" collections created light delicate vessels that are intricate and quite traditional but rendered modern against the lightness of the stems.
