Mullingar Pewter goblet featuring representation of St Mark from the Book of Kells. Traditionally, the Lion symbolises St Mark the Evangelist. The design around the foot of the tankard is inspired by Celtic Filigree work, which continues up to the bowl of the goblet, framing the figure of the lion. Mullingar pewter features each symbollic representation of the Evangelists on a separate goblet. The other three are: The ox representing Matthew, the Eagle representing John and the angel representing Matthew.

Mullingar Pewter was established in 1974, with most of the pieces still being made in the traditional way in the Mullingar workshop. 16 local men and women are employed, specially trained in the old casting methods, meticulous assembly and delicate hand finishing. The history of Irish Pewter goes back at least 800 years.Originally pewter was made from a composition of lead and tin. Today, the raw materials consist of 95% tin with the balance made up of copper and antimony.
